For Art’s Sake, what’s going on in Callao?
El Callao is the chief sea port of Peru and, although widely considered to be something of a coastal suburb of Lima (due to its proximity to the capital city), Callao has always been an independent constitutional province. It is in fact very much its own city and boasts a number of important historical sites and individual characters.
Callao has struggled with street crime and poverty for years. This however has been slowly changing with the help of a private investor, a visionary who founded the urban art project and community organization ‘Monumental Callao’. Over the past year, the neighborhood has been undergoing a total transformation through art. It is now boasting some of the most cutting edge artists and initiatives in Peru, with graffiti being one of the most popular ways of expression.
Enigma supports this amazing project by encouraging visits to Callao and the hands-on participation in the project. Enigma can arrange guided visits of the area or a private introductory graffiti class, where guests will learn the basic techniques in the hands of one of our favorite local artists. This is a unique opportunity to learn more about the place’s story and our expert’s very inspiring life experiences.
